“Selena Gomez Slams Fan For Bullying In Instagram Comment,” reads one headline.
Being a loyal follower of Selena Gomez, especially on Instagram, I already know what the news outlet is talking about…and they have it all wrong.
Selena Gomez had stumbled upon one of her fans bullying another fan in the comments section of one of her Instagram photos. She decided to shut the bully down by tastefully telling this girl how her remarks were hurtful and inappropriate on one of her photos. This way, the young lady could read, delete, and hopefully learn from Selena’s lecture.
Unfortunately, she mistakenly set herself up by screenshotting the comment notification and reposting the image with a caption reading “I’m dead.” Now being public, the photo was fair game for Selena to repost onto her own personal Instagram account.
People everywhere are cheering for Selena, but I’m not. Selena has proved that she is no better than the bully.
If Selena wanted to repost such a photo, she should have cropped out the girl’s image. Now her face is plastered all over the Internet. You know what happened afterward? All of Selena’s followers got a hold of the bully’s Instagram account and began attacking her. And trust me, she has quite the following of 10 million. As of today, the girl deleted her Instagram account. The heat that she might be taking in real life now and possibly for days to come is a mystery.
Also, what was Selena proving by reposting such an image? To show that she can handle a bully with class? The comment was impressive, but the repost not so much. In fact, it seemed a lot more like a publicity stunt, if you ask me. And on top of that, NOT a classy one.
Selena Gomez is a strong, independent woman with many accomplishments, a lot dealing with charity work. I do not doubt her kindness, but her judgment. She began with good intentions but turned into a bully herself.
